The Best Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

Updated September 2026 · 1 min read · Written against published cosmetic research

The instinct with acne-prone skin is to add more — more cleansing, more actives, more products promising to “dry it out.” In practice, that approach usually backfires. Here is a routine built around consistency instead of intensity.

The Core Principle

Acne responds best to steady, moderate treatment over months, not aggressive treatment over days. Over-cleansing and over-exfoliating strip the skin, which triggers more oil production and more irritation — often making breakouts worse, not better.

Morning Routine

  1. Gentle foaming cleanser — removes overnight oil without stripping the skin
  2. Niacinamide serum — regulates oil production and calms post-acne redness
  3. Lightweight, oil-free moisturizer — acne-prone skin still needs hydration; skipping it triggers more oil
  4. Non-comedogenic sunscreen (SPF 30+) — look for “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” labeling specifically

Evening Routine

  1. Gentle cleanser — double cleanse only if wearing sunscreen or makeup that needs it
  2. Salicylic acid (BHA) — 2-3 nights per week to start, gets into the pore to clear congestion
  3. Lightweight moisturizer — the same one used in the morning, or a slightly richer version if skin feels tight

Building In Stronger Actives

  • Introduce one active at a time — do not start salicylic acid and retinol in the same week
  • Retinol can be added on alternating nights once salicylic acid is well tolerated, but not on the same night as the BHA at first
  • Azelaic acid is a good option for the redness and dark marks acne leaves behind, and is gentle enough to use alongside the above

What to Avoid

Skip alcohol-based toners, harsh physical scrubs, and “purifying” cleansers that leave skin feeling squeaky-clean — that tight feeling is a sign the barrier has been stripped, not a sign the product is working. Consistency over 8 to 12 weeks matters more than any single product choice.
