The Best Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

Updated September 2026 · 2 min read · Written against published cosmetic research

Sensitive skin does not need fewer steps out of caution — it needs the right steps, in the right order, using formulas that support rather than test your barrier. Here is a routine built specifically around that goal.

The Core Rule for Sensitive Skin

Every product you add should either clean, hydrate, protect, or calm. If an ingredient does not clearly serve one of those jobs, it is a candidate to cut — sensitive skin reacts more to product load and layering than most people expect, even when every individual product is gentle.

Morning Routine

  1. Gentle cleanser — a low-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser or simply a splash of water if your skin does not feel like it needs a full cleanse
  2. Centella (cica) serum or cream — calms and supports the barrier before anything else goes on
  3. Fragrance-free moisturizer — look for ceramides and a short ingredient list
  4. Mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+) — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide formulas tend to be better tolerated than chemical filters on reactive skin

Evening Routine

  1. Gentle cleanser — the same one used in the morning
  2. Centella or ceramide serum — reinforcing barrier support overnight
  3. Richer moisturizer or barrier cream — a slightly heavier formula than your morning one to support repair while you sleep

What to Avoid (For Now)

  • Fragrance and essential oils — one of the most common triggers for reactive skin
  • High-strength acids and retinoids — introduce these later, one at a time, only once your barrier feels stable
  • Physical scrubs — too abrasive for skin that is already compromised
  • Stacking multiple new products at once — introduce one new product at a time, waiting 1-2 weeks before adding the next

When to Add More

Once your skin feels calm and consistent for several weeks, you can introduce one active at a time — azelaic acid and low-strength retinoids tend to be the most sensitive-friendly next steps. The goal is not to stay minimal forever, just to build a stable foundation first.
